I finally got my Weckl Live and very plugged in as well as the new Michel Camilo Live at the Blue note CDs. In addition, I just listened to them back to back. I must say, both are really incredible.
I have an observation though, and I'd love to hear your thoughts. To me, the Camilo performace FEELS so much better that Weckl's performace. I feel like Weckl is playing right ON the beat, while Horacio plays all over the beat when and where appropriate. Also, Horacio's feel is just so much more natural to me.
Thoughts?

Ladanny,
They're just different players and
playing differently.
I love them both, especially when they
groove Latin.

Hi Peter,
Oh, I love them both too! What I'm talking about is FEEL, especially the latin stuff! Just seems to flow better from Horacio. Weckl is hitting all the right notes so to speak, but it just doesn't feel the same.

One is latin the other is not, but has a "decent" understanding of the "genre", notice that the term is used loosely(as in, he's actually researched and studied, not unlike sum other people I see who instantly go "ohh LISTEN TO ME I'm PLAYING Samba" and probably don't realize they're making a fool of themselves)
As for "feel", again Horacio is latin, his personality and background is different than Dave's, most american's aren't really versed in latin with the exception of a few, so their understanding of what's latin comes from hearing guys like Weckl interpret the music, once they hear the roots of latin they will get a distorted picture, it's sad but that's just the way it is I guess for sum, no offense. Even when u take a guy like Antonio who's latin(mexican), both of them phrase/articulate different, even the jazz/fusion stuff, I do think Antonio is more fitted in that enviromnent after hearing him with Metheny at the Newport Jazz Festival. [Side Note: Palmieri, Clarke and The Bad Plus performed and OWNED the show along with Metheny)
Just my 50 Cents, my neck stay blinging, my rims stay gleaming, I'm shining man

Weckl remarked recently at his clinic [about his latin playing], quipping, "What're you gonna do? I'm a 'Gringo'," to much audience laughter...
...He admits he does feel it differently than say an "authentic" ethnic latin person...
Regardless of whether his feel is diff in this genre, ya can't deny he lays down some ferocious sh** within same said genre, "gringo" or not [not to mention he can SHRED reggae/ska/calypso - check out Patitucci's early instructional vid w him]...
What can you say - he's quite simply just a [bad-@$$ jazz/fusion monster] gringo interpreting [bad-@$$] latin & latin studies!
Hernandez, Sanchez, & Dave are all extremely formidable players in their own right...
PS - The Bad Plus are a really hip band

I hear you, Frank.
"Just because you can doesn't mean
that you should." That's it.
Yup. The 'gringo' stuff resonates.
I mean who listens to Latin. Mostly
Latin people. Most people don't dig
what Ive been trying to do lately.
They say they don't dig the music.
What do I do, listen to that or try
to get into it? I didn't listen to
Latin for most of my life. I now am
realizing what a sh--head I am and
am trying to do something about it!
You are what you envision and if you
don't see yourself playing this stuff
over and over again, you surely won't.
Horacio has practically done ONLY this.
What can you expect from him but that?
I love them both. They are different.
They are great. Don't give me one. I
want both of them.

Hello All-
I don't think that there is any kind of comparison between the two. But, I do believe that in some spots the Camilo album seems so busy, that it loses some of the feel. Sometimes I feel with these guys (El Negro, Marco Minneman, Terry Bozzio) that they are trying too hard to stretch the limits. Just because a person can play 400 rhythms at once, does not mean he should. I feel like this also goes for odd time signatures. At some point, it just seems like it stops being musical and becomes more mathematical! Does anyone know what I am talking about? I guess a better question is "Does anyone agree!?" I mean, did anyone while watching the Marco Minneman Video, say "What's the point?" when he said "The next song is in 15!" Sorry, just venting! "Oh yeah, the question was?"
I think that the Weckl album is my pick between the two for feel, chops and overall satisfaction. The Camilo Albums have some bright spots, but is overall lacking for me personally.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Guys! F.S.
